Abstract

Investigated, by using auditory models, how three perceptual parameters, loudness, pitch and sharpness, determine human echolocation. We used acoustic recordings from two previous studies, both from stationary situations, and their resulting perceptual data as input to our analysis. An initial analysis was on the room acoustics of the recordings. The parameters of interest were sound pressure level, autocorrelation and spectral centroid. The auditory models were used to analyze echolocation resulting from the perceptual variables, i.e. loudness, pitch and sharpness. Relevant auditory models were chosen to simulate each variable. Based on these results, we calculated psychophysical thresholds for detecting a reflecting object with constant physical size. A non-parametric method was used to determine thresholds for distance, loudness, pitch and sharpness. Difference thresholds were calculated for the psychophysical variables, since a 2-Alternative-Forced-Choice Paradigm had originally been used. We found that (1) blind persons could detect objects at lower loudness values, lower pitch strength, different sharpness values and at further distances than sighted persons, (2) detection thresholds based on repetition pitch, loudness and sharpness varied and depended on room acoustics and type of sound stimuli, (3) repetition pitch was useful for detection at shorter distances and was determined from the peaks in the temporal profile of the autocorrelation function, (4) loudness at shorter distances provides echolocation information, (5) at longer distances, timbre aspects, such as sharpness, might be used to detect objects. We also discuss binaural information, movements and the auditory model approach. Autocorrelation was assumed as a proper measure for pitch, but the question is raised whether a mechanism based on strobe integration is a viable possibility.

Abstract

Can what we imagine hearing change what we see? Whether imagined sensory stimuli are integrated with external sensory stimuli to shape our perception of the world has only recently begun to come under scrutiny. Here, we made use of the cross-bounce illusion in which an auditory stimulus presented at the moment two passing objects meet promotes the perception that the objects bounce off rather than cross by one another to examine whether the content of imagined sound changes visual motion perception in a manner that is consistent with multisensory integration. The results from this study revealed that auditory imagery of a sound with acoustic properties typical of a collision (i.e., damped sound) promoted the bounce-percept, but auditory imagery of the same sound played backwards (i.e., ramped sound) did not. Moreover, the vividness of the participants’ auditory imagery predicted the strength of this imagery-induced illusion. In a separate experiment, we ruled out the possibility that changes in attention (i.e., sensitivity index d′) or response bias (response bias index c) were sufficient to explain this effect. Together, these findings suggest that this imagery-induced multisensory illusion reflects the successful integration of real and imagined cross-modal sensory stimuli, and more generally, that what we imagine hearing can change what we see.

Multisensory interactions are the norm in perception, and an abundance of research on the interaction and integration of the senses has demonstrated the importance of combining sensory information from different modalities on our perception of the external world [123456789]. However, although research on mental imagery has revealed a great deal of functional and neuroanatomical overlap between imagery and perception, this line of research has primarily focused on similarities within a particular modality [10111213141516] and has yet to address whether imagery is capable of leading to multisensory integration. Here, we devised novel versions of classic multisensory paradigms to systematically examine whether imagery is capable of integrating with perceptual stimuli to induce multisensory illusions. We found that imagining an auditory stimulus at the moment two moving objects met promoted an illusory bounce percept, as in the classic cross-bounce illusion; an imagined visual stimulus led to the translocation of sound toward the imagined stimulus, as in the classic ventriloquist illusion; and auditory imagery of speech stimuli led to a promotion of an illusory speech percept in a modified version of the McGurk illusion. Our findings provide support for perceptually based theories of imagery and suggest that neuronal signals produced by imagined stimuli can integrate with signals generated by real stimuli of a different sensory modality to create robust multisensory percepts. These findings advance our understanding of the relationship between imagery and perception and provide new opportunities for investigating how the brain distinguishes between endogenous and exogenous sensory events.

Abstract

Information integration is considered a hallmark of human consciousness. Recent research has challenged this tenet by showing multisensory interactions in the absence of awareness. This psychophysics study assessed the impact of spatial and semantic correspondences on audiovisual binding in the presence and absence of visual awareness by combining forward–backward masking with spatial ventriloquism. Observers were presented with object pictures and synchronous sounds that were spatially and/or semantically congruent or incongruent. On each trial observers located the sound, identified the picture and rated the picture’s visibility. We observed a robust ventriloquist effect for subjectively visible and invisible pictures indicating that pictures that evade our perceptual awareness influence where we perceive sounds. Critically, semantic congruency enhanced these visual biases on perceived sound location only when the picture entered observers’ awareness. Our results demonstrate that cross-modal influences operating from vision to audition and vice versa are interactively controlled by spatial and semantic congruency in the presence of awareness. However, when visual processing is disrupted by masking procedures audiovisual interactions no longer depend on semantic correspondences.

Traditionally, perception has been described as a modular function, with the different sensory modalities operating as independent and separated processes. Following this view, sensory integration supposedly occurs only after sufficient unisensory processing and only in higher association cortices (). Studies in the past decade, however, promote a different view, and demonstrate that the different modalities interact at early stages of processing (). A good model for this early integration hypothesis has been the auditory cortex, where multisensory influences from vision and touch have been reported using a number of methods and experimental paradigms (). In fact, anatomical afferents are available to provide information about nonacoustic stimuli () and neuronal responses showing cross-modal influences have been described in detail (). These novel insights, together with the traditional notion that multisensory processes are more prominent in higher association regions, suggest that sensory integration is a rather distributed process that emerges over several stages. Of particular interest in the context of sensory integration are stimuli with particular behavioral significance, such as sights and sounds related to communication (; ; ; ; ).

The aim of the present study was to delineate the effects of odor-taste congruency on two central aspects of flavor: odor referral (or mislocalization) to the mouth, and pleasantness. We further aimed to test whether an eventual effect on pleasantness was mediated by odor referral. Aqueous solutions containing odors and tastes were prepared to create food-like stimuli with varying degrees of congruency, ranging from maximally incongruent to maximally congruent in nine steps. Thirty participants reported where they perceived the odors, and how much they liked the solutions. Congruency had a positive linear effect both on odor referral to the oral cavity and on pleasantness. However, the effect of congruency on pleasantness was not mediated by odor referral. These results indicate that as an odor-taste mixture approximates a mental representation of a familiar food, its components are increasingly merged into one perceptual object sensed in the mouth. In parallel, the mixture is evaluated as increasingly pleasant, which promotes consumption of familiar foods that have been determined through experience to be non-toxic. While the modulatory role of congruency on pleasantness and odor referral was confirmed, our results also indicate that these effects arise through distinct perceptual mechanisms.

Abstract

Cross-modal correspondences refer to associations between feature dimensions of stimuli across sensory modalities. Research has indicated that correspondence between audiovisual stimuli influences whether these stimuli are integrated or segregated. On the other hand, the audiovisual integration process plastically changes to compensate for continuously observed spatiotemporal conflicts between sensory modalities. If and how cross-modal correspondence modulates the “recalibration” of integration is unclear. We investigated whether cross-modal correspondence between auditory pitch and visual elevation affected audiovisual temporal recalibration. Participants judged the simultaneity of a pair of audiovisual stimuli after an adaptation phase in which alternating auditory and visual stimuli equally spaced in time were presented. In the adaptation phase, auditory pitch and visual elevation were manipulated to fix the order within each pairing of audiovisual stimuli congruent with pitch-elevation correspondence (visual leading or auditory leading). We found a shift in the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) between congruent audiovisual stimuli as a function of the adaptation conditions (Experiment 1, 2), but this shift in the PSS was not observed within incongruent pairs (Experiment 2). These results indicate that asynchronies between audiovisual signals congruent with cross-modal correspondence are selectively recalibrated.

Abstract

Many adjectives for musical timbre reflect cross-modal correspondence, particularly with vision and touch (e.g., “dark–bright,” “smooth–rough”). Although multisensory integration between visual/tactile processing and hearing has been demonstrated for pitch and loudness, timbre is not well understood as a locus of cross-modal mappings. Are people consistent in these semantic associations? Do cross-modal terms reflect dimensional interactions in timbre processing? Here I designed two experiments to investigate crosstalk between timbre semantics and perception through the use of Stroop-type speeded classification. Experiment 1 found that incongruent pairings of instrument timbres and written names caused significant Stroop-type interference relative to congruent pairs, indicating bidirectional crosstalk between semantic and auditory modalities. Pre-Experiment 2 asked participants to rate natural and synthesized timbres on semantic differential scales capturing luminance (brightness) and texture (roughness) associations, finding substantial consistency for a number of timbres. Acoustic correlates of these associations were also assessed, indicating an important role for high-frequency energy in the intensity of cross-modal ratings. Experiment 2 used timbre adjectives and sound stimuli validated in the previous experiment in two variants of a semantic-auditory Stroop-type task. Results of linear mixed-effects modeling of reaction time and accuracy showed slight interference in semantic processing when adjectives were paired with cross-modally incongruent instrument timbres (e.g., the word “smooth” with a “rough” timbre). Taken together, I conclude by suggesting that semantic crosstalk in timbre processing may be partially automatic and could reflect weak synesthetic congruency between interconnected sensory domains

Abstract


While research from the 1960s through to the 1980s was largely concerned with identifying separate modules in the mind/brain, there is an increasing realization [3][4][5][6] that understanding the interplay between components in an extended network is as important as fractionating that network into its component parts. Crossmodal integration is a paradigm case of the need to move beyond modularity in this way. There is also a growing awareness [4][5][6][7] that principles of crossmodal integration uncovered within one domain, such as speech perception may extend to many other domains, such as stimulus localization, and therefore reflect general architectural constraints. Several recent studies [8][9][10] now suggest that models of crossmodal integration must move beyond the notion of purely feedforward convergence between separate information sources, which has long been the dominant assumption in the field. Finally, the new methods of cognitive neuroscience, such as functional imaging, seem ideally suited for studying crossmodal integration [8][10][11][12] and have shed new light on fundamental issues.
